“Our mission is to create a safe sky”
With the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, many companies relocated to the Lviv region. One of them is “Piranha-Tech”. The company is from the Dnipropetrovsk region and is engaged in the development and production of electronic warfare systems. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the company has been actively working to protect the Ukrainian sky from enemy drones and unmanned aerial vehicles.
A significant contribution to the victory
The company “Piranha-Tech” relocated to the Lviv region from the Dnipropetrovsk region in April 2022. Its director and co-founder, Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi, has been engaged in the development and production of electronic warfare equipment since 2014. However, it was under the name “Piranha-Tech” that the company started operating in 2019.
“My partners from Israel and I saw the need to create a Ukrainian enterprise. It was clear to us that protection from widely available household drones would be a priority in the coming years. And the fact that Ukraine has talented specialists and innovative potential played a decisive role,” says Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.
The electronic warfare system is a set of measures and technical means aimed at controlling and reducing the effectiveness of the enemy’s radio communications. At the same time, it protects its own radio communications from possible threats.
From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the company’s management understood that Piranha-Tech could make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s victory. In order to avoid interruptions in work, they decided to move from the Dnipropetrovsk region, where there was active shelling, to a safer place. Therefore, they took advantage of the relocation program and moved production to the Lviv region – to Drohobych.
“The program from the Lviv OVA seemed the most attractive to us. Having chosen the most convenient location, we quickly gathered and transported production and employees to a new home in the Lviv region. In Drohobych, we were warmly welcomed and helped with the arrangement,” says Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.
Piranha-Tech moved all of its production facilities to the Lviv region. However, the range at the new location has been expanded, as the company has begun developing new systems for the needs of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Piranha-Tech also reregistered its enterprise from Dnipropetrovsk region to Drohobych, so it pays taxes to the treasury of Lviv region.
“Regarding production volumes, for security reasons I would not like to announce specific figures, but I will say that we pay quite good taxes. The relocation program from Lviv OVA provided for a change in the registration of the enterprise, so we are registered in Lviv region and pay taxes here,” says Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.
The war, the company says, did not particularly affect production processes. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, only logistics suffered.
“There were problems with obtaining components from Korean suppliers. But now we have optimized and learned to solve these issues during the war. Production processes are carried out according to certain rules, so it is difficult to talk about any differences during the war,” explains the director and co-founder of Piranha-Tech.
The company currently employs both employees who moved from the Dnipropetrovsk region and local residents. Piranha-Tech management emphasizes that the conditions, requirements and opportunities for all workers are the same. They select only qualified specialists from the radio electronics industry, electronic equipment engineers and programmers for their team. The company not only provides them with professional skills, but also constantly promotes their personal and professional growth.
“We understand that continuous improvement of skills is a key element of success in our industry, as technologies are developing rapidly. Therefore, we provide learning opportunities, organize trainings, seminars and other events that help our employees improve their knowledge and skills. We strive to create a favorable environment for professional growth and cooperation, which helps us stay ahead in the field of radio electronics,” says Oleksandr Ruzhinsky. A company with extensive experience
The company has extensive experience in the development and application of radio electronic systems. The company’s products are already used in more than 20 countries around the world. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Piranha-Tech has adapted to the needs of the military. Accordingly, it began to develop new products that can significantly affect the victory over the enemy in this high-tech war.
The range of products manufactured by Piranha-Tech is quite diverse. But mainly, these are electronic warfare and radio suppression systems of a wide spectrum of action. In addition, the company can design and manufacture systems of various modifications to order.
“Our products include anti-drone rifles of various classes, trench electronic warfare, demining systems, and large stations with a range of over 20 kilometers, which we are currently testing. At the same time, we are quite flexible. For example, we recently developed and released an anti-drone rifle, taking into account all the wishes of the customer. In addition, we develop and design our products with a view to the future,” says Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.
The principle of operation of the anti-drone rifle is to use directional antennas on the device to emit a special powerful signal. This signal interferes with all other signals and methods of communication between the drone and the operator. Thus, the enemy’s unmanned aerial vehicle loses its spatial orientation and remains motionless in the air. After some time, it begins to descend to a height of about 1.5 m. When the drone’s battery is completely discharged, the device simply falls to the ground.
All equipment is tested after production. Testing electronic warfare systems is a complex and multi-stage process. However, testing itself allows you to check the functionality, effectiveness of the system, and its compliance with the requirements before implementation in real conditions. Tests usually consist of different stages: from laboratory tests to field tests. Laboratory tests allow you to check the technical characteristics and functional capabilities of the equipment. Field tests are carried out in specially equipped areas where real operating conditions can be recreated.
“We conduct the first stage of testing ourselves, we have our own laboratory. There is also the possibility of field tests. Only then do we turn to specialized military units or research institutions that are further involved in testing such equipment,” explains Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.“Closed Sky”
In October 2022, the Piranha-Tech company launched the “Closed Sky” pilot project in the Lviv region. This is a multi-level system of electronic defense of a city or object from enemy drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. This is now very much needed by Ukrainian cities and infrastructure facilities.
The Closed Sky system uses radars of various ranges that detect enemy targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometers and accurately determine their location at a distance of up to six kilometers. The system also includes multifunctional radio jamming stations that interfere with drone signals, depriving the enemy of the ability to control them, as well as anti-drone guns that use electromagnetic waves to neutralize drones. Thus, it was possible to completely close the sky from enemy drones and unmanned aerial vehicles over Drohobych, Truskavets, Stebnyk and Boryslav.
“In the city of Drohobych, eight base complexes and two mobile ones are operating, which are installed on vehicles. This allows us to cover the area of Drohobych, Truskavets, Stebnyk and Boryslav and provide protection from reconnaissance drones and unmanned aerial vehicles,” says Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi.
Other cities are already interested in the Closed Sky system. Piranha-Tech made separate calculations for them, since the geography of the area is important in such systems, and it can differ significantly in different cities.
The main task of the company is to produce high-quality products that will help save people’s lives and protect cities from destruction by enemy drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. According to Oleksandr Ruzhynskyi, the company’s mission is to create a world where there will be a safe and peaceful sky.
